Standby Generator Planning: Loads, Fuel, Placement, and the Installation Process

A standby generator can restore power automatically after a utility outage, but the equipment purchase is only one part of the project. A dependable plan also covers the loads you want supported, fuel supply, placement, transfer equipment, and ongoing maintenance.

Before comparing generator sizes for a home in Centennial, Parker, Bailey, or Conifer, use these planning questions to define what a successful installation should do.

Backup-power planning starts with the household systems you want to keep running.

Which loads matter during an outage?

Start with priorities rather than square footage alone. Refrigeration, heating equipment, lighting, communications, and any well or sump pump may make the list. Air conditioning, electric cooking, water heating, and EV charging can change the required capacity significantly.

Have the installer evaluate running demand, motor-starting needs, and which loads may operate together. Ask for a clear list of supported equipment and any limitations.

Load management can temporarily pause lower-priority equipment to help avoid overloading the generator. Generac describes this approach as a way to manage competing high-demand appliances. Discuss what those pauses would mean in your household before choosing the system. The phrase “whole-house backup” should come with a specific explanation of expected operation.

Can the fuel supply support the selected unit?

Many residential standby systems use natural gas or propane. The fuel plan needs to match the exact generator and the other appliances using that supply.

A nearby gas connection does not establish that the meter and piping can support the added demand. For propane, discuss tank capacity, delivery access, and expected consumption with the fuel provider. Ask who is responsible for fuel-system assessment and installation, and whether utility or supplier changes are needed.

Where can the generator be installed safely?

Placement needs a site-specific review of exhaust, doors and windows, air intakes, equipment clearances, property restrictions, drainage, and maintenance access. Standby generators produce carbon monoxide and belong outdoors in an approved location. Follow the exact model’s installation instructions and applicable local requirements; a distance quoted for another generator is not a site plan.

For foothill properties, also ask the installer to verify the equipment’s suitability and output for the actual elevation and operating conditions. Generac’s model specifications identify altitude as an output factor. Think through access after snow, including access for maintenance and any fuel delivery.

Who coordinates the work?

A useful proposal identifies responsibility for electrical work, fuel work, site preparation, permits, inspections, and any utility coordination. It should specify the generator, transfer equipment, load-management components, and important exclusions.

The calendar includes more than the installation day. Equipment availability, permit review, site readiness, fuel preparation, and inspections can affect the sequence. Ask for the next project milestone and its dependencies rather than assuming a universal completion time.

Before handoff, the completed system should be commissioned and its transfer operation checked by the installation professionals. Generac’s installation overview includes simulating an outage to confirm system operation.

What happens after installation?

Review the owner’s manual, exercise settings, maintenance schedule, and service contact. Extended outages may require maintenance interruptions; automatic operation does not mean the equipment can be ignored indefinitely. Generac provides separate continuous-use maintenance guidance for applicable air-cooled models.

Common questions

Is standby power uninterrupted power?

No. The generator needs time to start and transfer the supported loads. If a device must stay powered without interruption, discuss a suitable additional backup arrangement with the relevant equipment professional.

Does a larger generator solve every installation constraint?

No. Fuel supply, safe placement, electrical compatibility, and local requirements still need review. Sizing and site planning should happen together.
